| Detailed Description |
The hotfix (Q269049) for the "Relative Shell Path" vulnerability has not been applied. The registry entry for the Windows Shell executable (Explorer.exe) in Windows NT and Windows 2000 uses a relative path name, instead of an absolute path name. This could allow a remote attacker to create a malicious Explorer.exe file in the root directory that loads instead of the original Explorer.exe, when a user next logs on to the system.
* Note: This check requires an account with Guest or upper privileges which can access the registry of the remote host to scan. Absence of these condition will result in the check not being performed and a False Negative for all vulnerable hosts.
* Platforms Affected: Microsoft Windows NT, 2000
