| Detailed Description |
The hotfix (KB840315) for the 'Vulnerability in HTML Help' has not been applied. Microsoft HTML Help is the standard help system for the Windows platform. Authors can use HTML Help to create online Help files for a software application or to create content for a multimedia title or for a Web site. The vulnerabilities in the HTML Help and showHelp modules could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on the affected host. If a user is logged on with administrative privileges, an attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system. A remote attacker could construct a hostile Web site that contains a malicious showHelp URL, which would be executed in the victim's Web browser within the security context of the hosting site, once the malicious link is clicked.
* Note: This check requires an account with Guest or upper privileges which can access the registry of the remote host to scan. Absence of these condition will result in the check not being performed and a False Negative for all vulnerable hosts.
