| Detailed Description |
The Hotfix(KB885836) for 'Buffer Overflow Vulnerability in WordPad' has not been applied. This update resolves the following newly-discovered, privately reported vulnerabilities:
- Table Conversion Vulnerability(CAN-2004-0571) - Font Conversion Vulnerability(CAN-2004-0901)
These vulnerabilities are caused by an unchecked buffer in the Word for Windows 6.0 Converter. By sending a malicious file to the target user and by persuading the target user to open the file, a remote attacker could cause the WordPad to fail and execute arbitrary code, if the target user opened the file. If a user is logged on with administrative privileges, an attacker who successfully exploited these vulnerabilities could take complete control of an affected system, including installing programs; viewing, changing, or deleting data; or creating new accounts with full privileges. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer privileges on the system would be at less risk than users who operate with administrative privileges. However, user interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability.
* Note: This check requires an account with Guest or upper privileges which can access the registry of the remote host to scan. Absence of these condition will result in the check not being performed and a False Negative for all vulnerable hosts.
