| Detailed Description |
The hotfix (KB896426) for 'Code Execution Vulnerability in Web Client Service' has not been applied. The Web Client service allows applications to access documents on the Internet. Windows XP and Server 2003 could allow a local attacker to execute arbitrary code on the system, caused by a buffer overflow vulnerability in the way that Windows processes Web Client requests. A local attacker can exploit this flaw by sending a malformed message to the Web Client Service. This can lead to arbitrary code execution resulting in privilege escalation. Web Client Service is disabled on Windows Server 2003 by default.
* Note: This check requires an account with Guest or upper privileges which can access the registry of the remote host to scan. Absence of these condition will result in the check not being performed and a False Negative for all vulnerable hosts.
