The Telephony service provides support for Telephony Application Programming Interface (TAPI). TAPI integrates telecommunications with the operating system. Microsoft Windows 98, Me, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on the system, caused by a buffer overflow in the Telephony service when data and permissions are validated. This vulnerability can be a remote code execution vulnerability or a local privilege elevation vulnerability, depending on the operating system version and configuration.

* Note: This check requires an account with Guest or upper privileges which can access the registry of the remote host to scan. Absence of these condition will result in the check not being performed and a False Negative for all vulnerable hosts.
