Detailed Description |
The hotfix (KB905749) for 'Code Execution Vulnerability in Plug and Play' has not been applied. Plug and Play (PnP) allows the operating system to detect new hardware when you install it on a system. Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows XP SP1 could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code, caused by a buffer overflow in the Plug and Play service. An authenticated attacker could exploit this flaw by sending a specially crafted RPC request to the affected service and execute code within the SYSTEM context. On Windows 2000 and Windows XP SP1, an authenticated user could remotely try to exploit this vulnerability. On Windows XP SP2, only an administrator can remotely access the affected component. Therefore, on Windows XP SP2, this is strictly a local privilege elevation vulnerability.
* Note: This check requires an account with Guest or upper privileges which can access the registry of the remote host to scan. Absence of these condition will result in the check not being performed and a False Negative for all vulnerable hosts.
