Severity 40
Port 139,445
Protocol TCP
Class SMB
Detailed Description The Cumulative Security Update (897715) for Microsoft Outlook Express has not been applied. Microsoft Outlook Express is an e-mail and newsgroup client shipped with
the Microsoft Windows operating system. Microsoft Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 running Outlook Express versions 5.5 or 6 are vulnerable to a stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability, which exists when parsing Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) server responses after issuing a "LIST" command. The NNTP allows news articles to be posted and retrieved. Exploitation of this vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code under the privileges of the currently logged on user. An attacker must create a malicious NNTP server and either force or convince a target user to connect to it with Outlook Express.

* Note: This check requires an account with administrative privileges which can log into the host to scan. Absence of these condition will result in the check not being performed and a False Negative for all vulnerable hosts.
