Microsoft Windows Media Player (WMP) is an application that ships with Microsoft Windows systems used to play various types of media files. Windows Media Player versions 7.1, 8, 9, and 10 are vulnerable to a buffer overflow vulnerability, caused by improper bounds checking of PNG files. A remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by constructing a malicious PNG image file that could potentially allow remote code execution if a user visited a malicious Web site or viewed a malicious e-mail message. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system.
