Detailed Description |
The hotfix (KB917953) for 'Remote Code Execution Vulnerability in TCP/IP' has not been applied. Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 are vulnerable to a buffer overflow vulnerability in the TCP/IP Protocol driver related to IP source routing. Source routing is a technique to determine the network route for a packet based on information supplied by the sender in the IP packet. By sending a specially-crafted IP packet to an affected host, a remote attacker could cause the host to crash or execute arbitrary code on the host. Successful exploitation requires that "IP Source Routing" is enabled (disabled by default on Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003 SP1) or the "Routing and Remote Access Service" is enabled (disabled by default).
* Note: This check requires an account with Guest or upper privileges which can access the registry of the remote host to scan. Absence of these condition will result in the check not being performed and a False Negative for all vulnerable hosts.
