Detailed Description |
The hotfix (MS06-050, KB920670) for 'Vulnerabilities in MS Windows Hyperlink Object Library' has not been applied. Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP1 and SP2, and Server 2003 up to SP1 are vulnerable to a buffer overflow error in the Hyperlink Object Library (hlink.dll), caused by improper bounds checking of hyperlinks. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by constructing a malicious hyperlink which could potentially lead to remote code execution if a user clicks a malicious link within an Office file, or e-mail message. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of the affected system. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability.
* Note: This check requires an account with Guest or upper privileges which can access the registry of the remote host to scan. Absence of these condition will result in the check not being performed and a False Negative for all vulnerable hosts.
