Detailed Description |
The hotfix (MS06-063, KB923414) for 'Vulnerability in Server Service' has not been applied. Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP1 and SP2, and Server 2003 up to SP1 are vulnerable to two vulnerabilities in the Server Service (SRV.SYS driver) as follows:
1) A buffer overflow vulnerability in the Server service (SRV.SYS) when handling first-class Mailslot messages could be exploited to corrupt memory by sending a specially crafted packet to the service. 2) An un-initialized buffer in the Server protocol driver could be exploited to view data from the Server Message Block buffers by sending specially crafted packets to the service.
A remote, unauthenticated attacker could execute arbitrary code on a vulnerable system. An attacker may also be able to cause a denial of service.
* Note: This check requires an account with Guest or upper privileges which can access the registry of the remote host to scan. Absence of these condition will result in the check not being performed and a False Negative for all vulnerable hosts.
