Detailed Description |
The Cumulative Security Update (MS07-056, 941202) for Microsoft Outlook Express and Windows Mail has not been applied. Microsoft Outlook Express is an e-mail and newsgroup client shipped with the Microsoft Windows operating system. Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 running Outlook Express versions 5.5 or 6, and Windows Vista running Windows Mail could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the affected host, caused by improper handling of malformed NNTP response. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by constructing a specially-crafted Web page that could potentially allow remote code execution if a user visited a Web page. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system.
* Note: This check requires an account with administrative privileges which can log into the host to scan. Absence of these condition will result in the check not being performed and a False Negative for all vulnerable hosts.
