Detailed Description |
The hotfix (MS08-034, KB948745) for 'Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability in WINS' has not been applied. The WINS (Windows Internet Name Service) service on Microsoft Windows Server 2000 SP4, and Server 2003 SP1 and SP2, is vulnerable to an elevation of privilege vulnerability, caused by improper validation of network packet source addresses. By sending specially-crafted WINS network packets to the vulnerable WINS service, a local attacker could exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code on the system with elevated privileges.
* Note: This check requires an account with Guest or upper privileges which can access the registry of the remote host to scan. Absence of these condition will result in the check not being performed and a False Negative for all vulnerable hosts.
