Microsoft Windows Media Player (WMP) is an application that ships with Microsoft Windows systems used to play various types of media files. Windows Media Player versions 7.1, 8, 9, and 10 are vulnerable to a buffer overflow vulnerability, caused by improper bounds checking of bitmap files. A remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by constructing a malicious bitmap file (.bmp) that could potentially allow remote code execution if a user visited a malicious Web site or viewed a malicious e-mail message. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system.
* Note: This check requires an account with Guest or upper privileges which can access the registry of the remote host to scan. Absence of these condition will result in the check not being performed and a False Negative for all vulnerable hosts.
